THEN AND NOW. THEM AND US.

Grandfather sitting with the author's son

I have a son who is three years old. Many a times, I come across articles, blogs, posts and conversations that convey how our childhood was far better than theirs. How we were so outdoorsy and the generation of today is so lazy.

  • When I was three, I didn’t speak English. It was only my mother tongue, Hindi. My son already corrects my grammar for both languages.

  • When I was three, I didn’t know my birth date. My son knows his.

  • When I was three, we didn’t even have a phone at home! My son conveniently locks, unlocks and finds his games on my still-complicated-for-me phone.

  • When I was three, I knew no cars. My son speaks of a Lamborghini and a Porsche with me, with the correct pronunciation!

  • When I was three, we played many mindless games which I want him to play too. I love those games! But I also love and am awed by his more structured approach.

  • When I was three, I played no sport. Kids of that age today swim and skate effortlessly!

  • When I was three, I needed Mummy to put on the TV for me. My son doesn’t need my help with it.

I loved the childhood I had. It was beyond perfect! At the time. Not as per today. I get awed and a little daunted when I enter a toy store today. I envy this generation. Not only because of the materialistic things they have at their disposal, but also because of their awareness.

We often say that the kids today are way smarter than what we were at that age. Isn’t that because of the exposure they have? Of course yes!!! “Keep it basic”, they say. “Why???”, I ask! Move ahead with the times and give this generation the best you can! That is how progress happens! That is how a society moves from good to better!

In my parents’ era, education for women was insignificant. During my school days, interaction between sexes (especially teens) was gaining popularity. Now, kids date as early as at the age of 11!!! Yes, keep them on track. But also set them free!!! Feed their curiosity even if it includes ‘google’ or the tablet or a smartphone! Where’s the harm?

Until such time that the newer generation supersedes the older one, the society will be stagnated. And honestly, where’s the fun in that???
